At approximately 2:45 p.m. today (Monday,) Sparta High School went into a secure perimeter and classroom hold. These procedures were enacted as precautionary measures in response to a potential safety concern.
Shortly before the secure perimeter and classroom hold were called, high school administrators received information about a missing handgun that was potentially in the possession of a student. While this information was unconfirmed, the district perceived it to be a credible safety concern and treated it as such.
This student was not present in any of the school buildings and the student’s whereabouts were and continue to be unknown.
As a precautionary measure, administrators canceled evening activities throughout the district and cleared all campuses. The district is continuing to work with law enforcement to ascertain the accuracy of the allegations and the exact nature of the safety concern.
In order to ensure the district is moving forward in a safe manner, it will not be holding school tomorrow, December 3. Neither students nor staff should report to school and no athletic practices or other activities will be held in the district tomorrow.
The district will share more information tomorrow as soon as possible.
