Tanner Robertson is Kiwanis Student of the Month
COVID-19 delayed awarding the Kiwanis Student of the Month on March 17 but did not lessen the well-deserved honor for Sparta High School Senior Tanner Robertson. His nominating SHS Social Studies Teacher Katlyn Buika described Robertson as a leader in her classroom, with a passion for education which, as a first-year teacher, she appreciated.
Robertson, the son of Toni and Darrell Robertson, said that as a freshman he enjoyed and appreciated his classes and his teachers. He admitted that he may have “slid a bit in my junior year, before realizing that I needed better graders to make sure that my life would go in the right direction.”
He admires the work ethics of his dad, “a welder for 25 years, the last 17 years with the same employer,” he said, and is on the way to achieving the same career. Currently a student in the SHS welding class, Robertson will enter the welding program at Western Technical College.
Buika, a recent UW-La Crosse graduate, said that as a Social Studies Teacher she covers a broad field—economics, geography, U.S. History and current events. She said that the first two weeks of COVID-19 Digital Learning required “creating as you go, and you get on your feet pretty quick. But I miss my students.”
Buika shares a common interest with Robertson—in her free time she is a metalsmith, creating sculptors and jewelry.
