CURTIS J. MENGELT
June 30, 1930—October 3, 2017
JANESVILLE — Curtis J. Mengelt, age 87, of Janesville, died from natural causes on Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2017, at Skaalen Nursing & Rehab Center, Stoughton.
He was born in Cataract, WI, on June 30, 1930, the son of Christ and Cora (Tooley) Mengelt. He grew up there and enjoyed hunting, fishing and playing semipro baseball as a pitcher for the Lacrosse Mohawks. Curtis worked at the Janesville General Motors Assembly plant for 33 years, retiring in 1992.
In retirement he loved to golf and spend time with his grandchildren. He was known for reading story books to his grandkids, inserting personal notes and pictures within. He was a lifetime fan of the Green Bay Packers, Milwaukee Brewers and Wisconsin Badgers. Curtis also knew his way around the kitchen, and could cook a variety of delicious dishes, especially his homemade soups. Family and friends also looked forward to his homemade fudge and chocolate/caramel turtles at Christmas.
He is survived by his children: Stephen (Rondi), Jeffrey (Rosalind Schulze), Michael, Kevin and Patrice; stepchildren: Kris Shear (Brad), Kim Cyrus and John Dregne; sisters, Donna (Dennis) Zillmer, and Sandy Molster; 12 grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and many other extended family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Earl and Gordon Mengelt; sisters, Elizabeth Luther, and Shirlimae Mengelt; step son-in-law, Sam Cyrus; and daughter-in-law, Maureen Mengelt (Curran).
Join in a Celebration of Curt’s life at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 21, 2017, at his home, 879 Sutherland Ave., Janesville, to watch the Badger game, a team he so loved.
Lasting Memorials may be made to a charity of your choice in Curt’s name.
Another Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 28, 2017, at GALS Longbranch Bar & Grill, 7509 Carmel Ave., Sparta, WI.
