ERNEST (ERNIE) ANTHONY SCHMITZ

February 14, 1932—May 7, 2020

CASHTON - Ernest (Ernie) Anthony Schmitz, 88, of Cashton, Wisconsin, passed away peacefully in the arms of his loving family on Thursday, May 7, 2020 while living in Sparta with his daughter, Liz, and son-in-law, Doug.

Ernie was one of eleven children, born at the home farm on St. Mary’s Ridge, to Louie and Mary (Herricks) Schmitz on February 14, 1932. He graduated from Cashton High School in 1950 and worked at the St. Mary’s Cheese Factory. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1953 and served almost two years as a Battalion Mail Clerk while overseas in South Korea. Upon his return to Cashton, Ernie had a blue 1955 Chevy he ordered through his brother-in-law, Norbert Weibel, from Schroeder’s Chevrolet Garage, waiting for him. He worked at the Cashton Cooperative Creamery (which then merged with Sparta Hiawatha Valley Dairies and was later bought by Golden Guernsey). He also was a school bus driver for the Cashton School District for about 8 years. He lived with his mother, Mary, and sister, Agnes.

On May 18, 1985, he was united in marriage to the love of his life, Lucy (Schallock) Schuttemeier at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Cashton. After a honeymoon in Hawaii, they lived their married life in the Village of Cashton. Ernie and Lucy loved spending time with each other, as well as with family and friends. They enjoyed going for rides in the country, playing cards with friends, eating a nightly bowl of ice cream, and listening to country music together. Ernie played cards and shot pool every chance he got with friends, relatives, and grandchildren. Another hobby of his was tinkering with things in “his garage”.

Ernie worked as a butter maker for Golden Guernsey until he retired. He was awarded Champion Butter Maker at the Wisconsin State Fair three times. After retirement, Ernie enjoyed driving through the countryside of Cashton and spent many hours driving family of the Amish Community for out of town shopping and appointments.

Ernest was a member of the Cashton American Legion and a lifetime member of the VFW. One of the highlights of his life was going on the Freedom Honor’s Flight on May 7, 2016, with his daughter, Judy. He actually passed away 4 years to the day of this momentous event. His family will always remember him as a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. They treasure the time they spent with him. He will be missed by many, but never forgotten.

He is survived by his four children, Elizabeth (Douglas) Sullivan of Sparta, Kenneth (Kimberly) Schuttemeier of Westby, Judith (Jeffrey) Williams of Cashton, and Keith (Kimberly) Schuttemeier of Stoughton; his grandchildren, Brooklynn (Craig) Larson, Alexis Sullivan, Karissa (Aaron) Keenlance, Kyla (Joe) Wood, Kenneth (fiancée, Alexis) Schuttemeier, Jessica Williams, Jason Williams, Jillian (Chase) Niemyjski, Brittany Schuttemeier, and Paige Schuttemeier; his great grandchildren, Kiarra, Amaya, Alyx, and William Keenlance, Jaxon and Zander Wood, Jessa Williams, and Octavia Niemyjski. Ernie is also survived by his brother Ronald Schmitz and sister-in-law Marllyn Schmitz, both of Cashton; along with many other nieces, nephews, relatives, and good friends.

Ernest was preceded in death by his dear wife, Lucy; his parents, Louis and Mary; brothers and sisters-in-law, Lawrence (June), Albert (Luella), Charles (Florence) Paul, and Julia, along with two infant brothers, Herbert and Arnold; and sisters and brothers-in-law, Ida (Norbert) Weibel, Julia (Louis) Braun, and Agnes Schmitz.

Ernie’s family would like to thank Dr. Bade of Scenic Bluffs for the wonderful medical care and compassion provided to him over the years. A special thank you to Ernie’s extended family for all their love and support.

A celebration of life and graveside funeral service with full Military Honors will be held Friday, May 15, 2020 at 3:00 p.m. at the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, Cashton, Wisconsin. Father Michael Klos will officiate. Due to social distancing guidelines, a unique drive through visitation will be held from 12:00 p.m.. until 3:00 p.m. in the cemetery. Guests will remain in their vehicles at all times and form a receiving line to greet Ernie’s family. Social distancing practices will be implemented.

A funeral procession will leave the Funeral Home at 11:00 a.m. and drive through the country over St. Mary’s Ridge past the home farm of Ronald Schmitz prior to the arrival at the cemetery.

The Torkelson Funeral Home of Cashton is assisting the family with arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent to Freedom Honor’s Flight, Cashton V.F.W., or Sacred Heart Handicap Accessible Fund.
