ROCKLAND - LaVerne “Bud” Lester Mitchell, 83, of Rockland, WI, passed away Thursday, October 4, 2018, at Norseland Nursing Home in Westby, WI.

Bud was born November 17, 1934, to Lester and Luella (Luckasson) Mitchell, in La Crosse, WI. He attended Portland’s one room school house through seventh grade and then went on to Cashton High School where he graduated. Bud started farming on the family farm after graduation. Along with farming, he took a job driving school bus for the Cashton School District and this is where his life changed. On one of the students’ school outings, Bud met a chaperone, fell in love, and got married. He married Judith Nelson on July 17, 1971, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Shennington.

Bud drove school bus for 44 years. He drove for many of the sporting events, late bus, and a lot of class trips. Bud also drove milk truck and worked for the Portland Township. He was a faithful and strong supporter of Immanuel Lutheran Church and Moen Cemetery. Being a groundskeeper and sexton for the cemetery was a long-time job that Bud was happy to do.

Bud loved his dancing days starting out at the Avalon and Concordia and later going to every wedding dance with Judy. His other true love was his beloved Farmall tractors and the many tractor rides that he enjoyed. He was a wonderful, caring and kind man. Bud cherished time spent with his family and grandkids. He will be missed by many.

Bud is survived by his children, Scott (Stacy) Mitchell of West Salem, and Sheri (Dave Grant) Mitchell of Rochester, MN; three granddaughters, Elsa, Celia, Tula and one grandson Will; his brother, Ronald Mitchell of Sparta, WI; sister, Beverly (Clinton) Bagstad of Coon Valley, WI; niece and nephew, Linda (Chad) Barth and Lance (Tami) Bagstad; brother-in-law, Rodney (Jeannie Lee) Nelson of Oak Ridge, TN; sister-in-law, Laura Schill of Madison, WI; along with other relatives and dear friends.

Bud was preceded in death by his wife, Judy in 2011; his parents; and his special chocolate lab, Georgia.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 13, 2018, 3:00 p.m. at the Immanuel Moen Lutheran Church located on County Road PC, rural Cashton. Pastor Amanda Schultz Garcia will officiate. Burial will follow in the Moen Cemetery. Family and friends are invited for visitation Saturday from 12:00 noon until 3:00 p.m. at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Bud’s name to the Immanuel Moen Lutheran Church, Moen Cemetery or to Norseland Nursing Home.
