WILLIAM S. OLSON

 

January 7, 1926—January 3, 2017

   CATARACT - William S. Olson, 90, of Cataract, died Tuesday, January 3, 2017 at Rolling Hills Rehabilitation Center, Sparta.

   He was born on January 7, 1926 in the town Angelo to Ralph and Gertrude (Williams) Olson. He grew up in Angelo until the eighth grade and then moved to Farmers Valley with his family. He graduated from Sparta High School.

   Bill was drafted after high school. He was stationed overseas during WWII and arrived shortly after the Battle of the Bulge in February 1945. He served with the 3rd Battalion, HQ Company, 301st Infantry, 94th Division.

   After the service, Bill worked for Allis Chalmers in La Crosse and also drove dump truck. He married Abby Teasdale on June 5, 1954 at the United Methodist Church in Sparta. After marriage, they moved to the family farm in Little Falls.

   Bill was a handyman, a good welder, and was always fixing things for his neighbors. He enjoyed cutting brush and trimming weeds. He loved dancing, polka music, playing cards, hunting, and fishing. He became a resident of Rolling Hills in September 2015.

   Bill is survived by his sons, Steve Olson, Dan (Jamie) Olson, and Brian (special friend, Laurie) Olson, all of Cataract; his grandchildren, Becky (Matt) Megan, Brianna (Dillon), Rachel, Maverick, and Miranda; a great-grandson, Landon; his brothers, Robert (Joanne) Olson of Sparta and Maurice (Edwina) Olson of Sparta; brother-in-law, Earl Tichenor of Bangor; sister-in-law, Jean Olson of Whitewater; and many other relatives and friends.

   He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Abby on June 24, 2013; his brother, George Olson; and his sister, Margaret Tichenor.

   A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, January 12, 2017 at Lanham-Schanhofer Funeral Home, Sparta, with Reverend Roberta Nowicki officiating. Burial with full military honors, provided by Melrose American Legion Post 439, will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Sparta.

   Family and friends are invited to call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. and on Thursday at the funeral home from 10 a.m. until time of services.
