Sparta Library expansion donations near $400K
Last month, when Sparta Free Library Director Shanneon Grant agreed to give Kiwanians an update on the Library’s Expansion Plan Campaign, she was unaware that she would be leaving SFL to head the La Crosse Public Library in August.
Yet, true to form, Grant presented at the Club’s luncheon on Tuesday, July 23, a campaign progress report, beginning with the newly produced video describing the needs of the current Library and plans for its expansion. Grant said current pledges from corporate businesses and individuals amount to $391,000, with a goal of $1.5 million.
Grant called the Sparta Club a trend-setter as the first Campaign donor, making a $50,000 gift to fund the Children’s Room. Grant described other opportunities for Naming Recognition.
Grant said Amy Bernath, member and treasurer of the SFL Board and already an Expansion Campaign activist, has agreed to serve as interim campaign director. The SFL Board is responsible for seeking a new SFL Director.
Grant credited the Library Board for its operational budget that included funds for initial expansion planning well before her SFL arrival. She said that when the Sparta City Council later pledged to fund 70% of the $5 million project “it gave reality to the fact that it really would happen. I still am amazed by that!”
Grant, noting that it was her last day as a member, thanked the Kiwanis Club for “allowing her to be a part of its caring organization, with its strong desire to improve the community.” Referring to the Library and the Sparta community Grant said, “It feels like home. It will always be a part of my heart.”
