Bangor volleyball team looks to improve on stellar 2016 season
Bangor is coming off a stellar 2016 season on the volleyball court, and if its performance at a weekend tournament in Boscobel is any indication, the Lady Cardinals spikers are in for another wild ride.
Bangor opened its 2017 campaign by posting six unanswered wins to capture the team title at the seven-team Boscobel Tournament.
Last season, the Lady Cardinals went 11-3 in Scenic Bluffs Conference play to finish in a three-way tie for the 2017 league title.
Bangor went on to capture a Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Division 4 regional championship as well, and advanced to the sectional championship before coming up just one match of a state tournament berth.
This season, the Lady Cardinals return six letter winners from last year’s championship team, including seniors Ariana Hundt, Jaclynn Freit, Emma Wittmerhaus and Haylee Leonard and juniors Courtney Oesterle and Ashlie Lockington.
Other players on this year’s varsity roster are Elizabeth Nicolai, Trisha Jones, Kaylee Herman, Cora Kostuch and Aubrey Johnson.
With a tourney title to their credit already, Bangor head coach Carrie Radke likes the way her team has opened its 2017 season.
“So far, so good,” said Radke.
“Things are going really well,” she continued. “We started off playing together this season better than we ended last season.”
Radke said the Lady Cards are swinging well at the net and she believes Bangor’s offense may pose problems for its opponents.
“I feel we have a pretty powerful offense,” she offered. “And the girls have a close-knit relationship on and off the court, so that will be a strength as well.”
As for a weakness, Radke said Bangor’s defense could use a little work.
“We’re doing a lot of digging drills in practice – hitting at two or three people and forcing them to move,” she explained.
With three teams sharing the 2017 championship, the SBC race was a tight one last season and Radke expects history to repeat itself this year.
“I think it’s going to be as tight this year as it was last year,” she said.
“I feel it’d going to be anybody’s race,” Radke continued. “I would say we’ll fit in the top three.”
Bangor will open its 2017 Scenic Bluffs Conference schedule on Tuesday, Sept. 5, when the Lady Cardinal spikers host rival Cashton in a 7 p.m. match at Bangor High School.
I addition to tying with Royall for the conference championship last season, Bangor and Cashton met in the WIAA Division 4 sectional semifinal match at Sparta, where Bangor came away with a 3-1 victory and a berth in the sectional final.
