Falcon football team starts season tonight

The Brookwood Falcons will play their season opener tonight (Thursday) against the De Soto Pirates at La Crosse Logan High School.
While the match-up is scheduled as a home game for the Pirates, it’s location was changed because De Soto’s football field suffered flood damage last year.
The Falcons will be looking to rectify last year’s mistakes against the Pirates, which resulted in a 31-0 loss.
“Ultimately, that game just came down to execution,” said Brookwood head coach Jeremy Mack. “We did not execute our offense well at all.”
Mack believes his team is looking “a lot more crisp and detailed” this year, so he is confident that Falcon gridders can put up a better fight tonight.
Offensively, he said that De Soto traditionally likes to utilize several of different formations, so the Falcons will be relying on their young defense to execute.
“The guys just have to know exactly who they’re responsible for,” Mack said. “You can really whittle it down to relatively simple responsibilities, then guys just have to go out and execute and not get caught trying to make a decision.”
Mack is confident in his the abilities of the Brookwood this year.
In fact, he said this season’s version of the Falcon offense the most balanced he’s had in his three years as head coach.
“I think we can really have success in a lot of different ways,” he said. “We can run between the tackles if the situation presents itself. If that’s not there, we have the ability to get to the edge because we have good blockers, good backs and receivers willing to get in there and set the edge.”
The team has a new varsity quarterback - junior Jack Mulvaney - who Mack believes will allow the team to have a viable passing game.
Mulvaney has been the junior varsity quarterback for two years, so going up against the varsity in the past has helped him get used to throwing in tight spots and having guys in his face.
“He’s very composed,” said Mack.
Tonight’s contest between the Brookwood Falcons and De Soto Pirates will get underway at La Crosse Logan High School.
