Golfers finish fourth at Cedar Creek
The Sparta girls golf team kept pace in the Mississippi Valley Conference race Wednesday, finishing fourth in a pair of league meets at The Golf Club at Cedar Creek.
The outing was actually an 18-hole event, but it was broken into two nine-hole MVC matches hosted by Holmen and La Crosse Aquinas.
Sparta finished fourth in both nine-hole matches after capturing third in the Aug. 27 MVC season opener at Coulee Golf Bowl in Onalaska.
Sophomore Ginny Yahnke led the way for the Lady Spartan linksters on the front nine with a round of 54 on the par-36 layout at Cedar Creek.
Seniors Becca Yahnke and Laney Sullivan both carded a nine-hole round of 56 on the front nine, while junior Delaney Schaller finished just one stroke back with a nine-hole total of 57.
Ginny Yahnke finished in a four-way tie for 17th in the individual standings, while Becca Yahnke and Sullivan tied for 22nd and Schaller finished in 24th place among the 34 golfers competing.
Onalaska won the first nine-hole meet with a team score of 186, while defending MVC champion Tomah finished seven strokes back in second with 193 team tallies.
Third place went to Aquinas with a 22, followed by Sparta in fourth with 223, La Crosse Logan-Central in fifth with 248 and Holmen with an incomplete score in sixth place.
Becca Yahnke fired a nine-hole total of 51 on the back nine to pace the Lady Spartan linksters in the second nine-hole match.
Schaller finished just three strokes behind, firing her best nine-hole score of the season with a 54 on the par-35 back nine at Cedar Creek.
Sullivan added a nine-hole round of 55 for the Lady Spartans, while Ginny Yahnke finished with a 57.
Becca Yahnke finished 15th in the individual standings on the back nine, while Schaller earned a tie for 19th place.
Sullivan finished in 22nd place and Ginny Yahnke earned a tie for 24th.
Onalaska captured the second nine-hole match as well, finishing with a team score of 178, while Tomah had a 189 in second place.
Aquinas took third with a 185, followed by Sparta in fourth at 217, Logan-Central in fifth with 237 and Holmen with an incomplete score in seventh place.
Becca Yahnke led Sparta with an 18-hole total of 107, while Schaller, Sullivan and Ginny Yahnke finished with 111 strokes apiece.
The Lady Spartan linksters are back in action at 2 p.m. Friday, when they host a nine-hole MVC meet at River Run Golf Course in Sparta.
