Late comeback falls shy for Sparta Juniors
A late comeback effort came up one run short Friday night, as the Sparta Juniors fell 5-4 to Holmen in American Legion baseball action at Sparta Memorial Park.
Holmen used three straight singles in the top of the first to jump out to an early 4-0 lead.
Sparta answered in the bottom of the frame, when Greg Jacobs drew a lead-off walk, stole second, advanced to third on an error and scored on Nick Church’s RBI groundout to short, cutting the deficit to 4-1.
Both teams went scoreless over the next three innings, before Sparta pulled within one run of the lead with a two-run rally in the bottom of the fifth.
Adam McKee drew a one-out walk to ignite the Sparta offense in the fifth frame and Phillip Richards followed with a single.
McKee scored on a Holmen error and Brett Stuessel singled home Richards to cut the deficit to 4-3 with two innings to play.
Holmen upped its advantage to 5-3 with a solo run in the top of the seventh, but Sparta answered in its half of the frame, when Jacobs walked, stole second and scored on an error.
Sparta loaded the bases with just one out after that, but failed to push the tying run across.
