Sparta Legion U-17 baseball team drops home game to Holmen
Holmen used a seven-run rally in the top of the fifth to break open a close game and pull away for a 12-4 victory over Sparta in U-17 American Legion Baseball action at Sparta Memorial Park Tuesday night.
Sparta fell behind early, but rallied in the fourth frame to pull within a run of the lead, before Holmen answered with seven runs in the fifth and one more in the sixth to put the game away.
After a scoreless first frame, Holmen jumped out to an early lead with a two-run outburst in the top of the second.
Two more runs in the top of the third doubled the Holmen advantage to 4-0.
After holding Holmen in check in the top of the fourth, Sparta answered in the bottom of the frame with a three-run rally.
Austin Stuessel reached on an error to lead off the fourth inning for Sparta and Adam McKee followed with a double to put runners on second and third.
Stuessel scored on Riley Peterson’s RBI groundout to shortstop and Gabe Dearman came through with a single to score McKee for Sparta’s second run on the inning.
Back-to-back Holmen errors followed, allowing Dearman to score on a RBI by Dalton Mayer, pulling Sparta to within one run of the lead at 4-3.
Holmen came right back in the top of the fifth, scoring seven runs on six straight singles to open up an 11-3 advantage.
Holmen added an insurance run in the top of the sixth to increase its advantage to 12-3.
Sparta’s final run came in the bottom of the seventh, when Mason Hampel drew a lead-off walk and scored after three more walks issued by the Holmen pitcher.
Peterson and Dearman both finished with a single and one RBI to lead Sparta at the plate, while McKee added a double and Phillip Richards had a single.
The Sparta American Legion U-17 team is back in action Monday, when it hosts West Salem in a 7 p.m. game at Sparta Memorial Park.
