Timberwolves look for two in a row
The Tomah Timberwolves will have the chance to start its season off at 2-0 Friday night, when they hit the road for a nonconference football game at Black River Falls Tigers.
The Timberwolves came out on top 32-21 in last Friday’s season and home opener with Mauston, and Tomah head coach Brad Plueger said his offensive line did a good job protecting on pass plays against the Golden Eagles.
He also said that the team’s young defense did a good job, especially the defensive backs and linebackers who were responsible for defending against Mauston’s pass-heavy spread offense.
But Friday brings with it a different team and Plueger said the Timberwolves need to improve their run blocking on the line, safeties filling in on run plays, linebackers playing downhill and tackling technique to win their second straight.
Black River Falls lost 28-13 to Sparta in Friday’s season opener, but Plueger hasn’t counted the Tigers out.
“Black River Falls is the second biggest rivalry on our schedule besides Sparta,” Plueger said. “The game will be a grind like it is every year, so preparation and conditioning will be even bigger this week.”
Plueger said that he expects the Tigers to try and spread the Timberwolves’ defense out and focus on running the ball before establishing a passing game.
“They have nice athletes that play well in space,” he said. “We need to be ready.”
Defensively, Plueger expects the Tigers to show them the 4-4 and 3-4 formations they saw last year.
He says he will know how the Tigers secondary will play early on, depending on how they cover the Timberwolves’ receivers.
Plueger said Connor Prielipp pretty much cemented his spot as the starting quarterback for now with his performance last Friday - throwing for 191 yards and four touchdowns.
Plueger, however, said Prielipp still needs some work in his pre-snap reads.
“As of right now he is our guy,” Plueger said.
Friday night’s nonconference game between the Timberwolves and the Tigers is slated to get underway at 7 p.m. at Black River Falls High School
